Hey y'all! I'm Makini. I'm an artist, organizer, and a parent based between traditional lands of Tutelo-Saponi speaking peoples and lands of the Lenape peoples... and I prepare taxes!

...at least in the meantime, while we are collaborating toward more beautiful systems of interdependence and care, and eventually dancing in the rubble of the capitalism that we have destroyed together... in the meantime, I want to help folx navigate through the bureaucracy of the IRS and the related state and local revenue departments. I want folx to understand their tax responsibility, to know how to access the deductions and credits available to them, and to be empowered to make informed decisions about how to participate within that.

I prepare taxes with a collective called Philly Tax Prep for Artists, but we prepare taxes for all kinds of people (not just artists) throughout what is currently called the US. While my passion is working with independent artists and freelancers, I am also qualified to complete business returns (1065, 1120S, 1120, 990 series) for small business owners. My goal is to help my tax clients to be savvy taxpayers, and to know what systems (apps, account setups, easily customizable spreadsheets) to put in place so that the following year's tax preparation is as simple and straightforward as can be. And if you are dealing with years of back taxes, I am happy to help.

MY QUALIFICATIONS

I completed an income tax preparer certification through H&R Block, Small Business return preparation through the Income Tax School and National Association of Tax Preparers, and Bookkeeping certifications via Coursera and Intuit Academy. I have 15 years of management experience of the small business finances associated with my creative and freelance work. You can find out more about my creative practice here. I have recently been partnering with Amy Smith on financial planning and dreaming workshops for artists, and have informally consulted with artist entrepreneurs around tax, budgeting and business management questions for several years. In addition to my desires to help my clients become savvy navigators of the tax system, I decided to devote a portion of the year to tax preparation so that I can earn more money to support some new research elements of my creative practice and my eventual purchase of a new house with rehearsal space.
